Robot Love-Affair: Our AI Infatuation & Automation Bias

Imagine trusting your GPS so much that you end up driving into a lake – that’s AB in a nutshell!

Automation Bias is our tendency to over-rely on technology, sometimes with hilarious (or disastrous) consequences.

The Taxing Truth: When AI Goes Rogue

Remember that time the Dutch government turned into a bad episode of 'Black Mirror'? In 2021, an AI algorithm was coded to discriminate against non-Dutch citizens. The AI program in their Social Service system falsely accused thousands of non-Dutch citizens of tax fraud. The result? A real-life drama featuring broken families and lost jobs.

Australia's Robodebt

Down Under, the Australian government had its AI biases moment with Robodebt. This AI system wrongly accused the less fortunate of owing money. The AI was sending out incorrect debt notices to Australians, and it focused on the financially sensitive population. The outcome? A hefty $1.7 billion apology from the government issued by the local court.

Denmark's Wrongfully Accused

In Denmark, the police trusted their AI to track the phone's GPS data of people who were in the vicinity of crime locations. The case is ongoing, but as of today, 32 inmates were released as their cases had little evidence for their wrongful convictions. Imagine being jailed for years because your phone's GPS had a bad day!

In a study, correspondents were more likely to trust robots with tasks involving emotion than analytics.

Robots for feelings: Automation Bias study

A study by Stock-Homburg and Nguyen from the Technical University Darmstadt (Stock-Homburg & Nguyen, 2023) shows we're more biased towards robots in emotional tasks. Yes, surprisingly we're more likely to trust a robot's advice on a bad hair day than on math homework. This can raise our own responsibility in trusting AI in areas we are supposed to trust our own emotions.

The moral of the story?

Our techno-romance with AI is a thrilling yet cautionary tale. While these automated systems can make life easier, our blind trust in them often leads to comical, if not downright problematic, situations.

It's crucial to remember that AI, like your know-it-all friend, doesn't always get it right. In our pursuit of convenience, let's not forget the good old-fashioned human touch. A pinch of skepticism can go a long way, and for now, AI does not have a grasp of the fluidity of scepticism.

The Future is Now, But Let's Not Get Carried Away

As we march boldly into a future filled with AI assistants, self-driving cars, and digital butlers, let's make sure that some things stay utterly human. Anger, love, jealousy, empathy - those things feel and can’t be calculated by an algorithm.

The future isn't just about laughing off these mistakes; it's about learning from them. As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, we must become savvy co-pilots, ready to take the wheel when technology takes a metaphorical nap. Whether it's questioning an AI's decision or double-checking a robot's suggestion, a little human wisdom ensures that our future is not only high-tech but also high-wisdom.

Next time your Roomba suggests a career change, maybe take it with a grain of salt, eh?
